Voice: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (DB)

VOICE Overview

VOICE IN THE DB FORUMS

When English teachers talk about Point of View & Voice, they are referring to a special grouping of pronouns. Point of view is divided into three voices, or three groups of pronouns known as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person (voice). The most skilled writer pays attention to point of view because she/he knows that it is a key element in writing style

Academic writing is in 3rd person voice.  When you create your essay papers for our ENGL101 course, you will always write in 3rd person voice.  However, in the Discussion Board forum, you will be allowed to venture into 1st and 2nd person voice, with predominantly 3rd person voice usage (see below for clarity).

PART 1: INITIAL POST
The Initial post in the discussion board forum will be in 2 formats since it has two sections (an introduction and an argument).
  1. INTRODUCTION—about yourself
    • The introduction part of your Initial post (about you), can be in 1st person voice.
  2. PERSUASIVE ARGUMENT and ANALYSIS—about the video argument
    • However, after the personal introduction, you will only write in 3rd person voice; after all, you are creating an argument.
    • When you create your argument, you are presenting your ideas with professional assertion and support (3rd person voice).
Go to Mesa Community College's site for the full article about Point of View.

PART 2: PEER REPLY POST
The participation/peer reply post in the discussion board forum will be in 2 formats since it has two sections
  • your response to the classmate’s introduction (1st), and
  • your analysis of the classmate’s argument (2nd and 3rd).

After your Initial post, you will review all classmates’ posts to choose one to reflect upon and analyze.
  1. First, you will acknowledge something from his/her introduction.
    • This can be in 1st or 2nd person voice.
  2. Next, you will begin your reflection.
    • Keep in mind that your reflection is an argument;
    • however, you are also directly speaking to a person, and so you are allowed to write in 2nd and 3rd person voice
    • Assert your point in as much 3rd person voice as possible
    • Try to keep your reflection as professional and kind as you can, but also remember that this is not an essay.
    • This is a Discussion Board post where you are responding to your classmate’s post with reflection and analysis.
    • While your viewpoint will come into play in the Discussion Board forum, it is best if you remain in 3rd person voice as much as possible.
    • Stick to your assertions—which would be in 3rd person voice—and argue your point in as much 3rd person voice as possible.

Remember these key points:
  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person voice (is allowed in different parts of discussion board writing, but
  • only 3rd person voice is allowed in academic writing in the form of an essay/paper).
